SYMPOSIUM IV - COSMETIC & THE SKIN

Chairperson: Patricia Engasser (USA)

Aims and Overview

There is an ever widening use of cosmetics in the world.  The cosmetic industry with support of advertising opens new markets in the third world. Adolescents and pre-adolescent girls are encouraged to use cosmetics in the media. As women work outside the home, there is increasing daily use of cosmetics. Industry efforts continue to increase cosmetic usage among men. Dermatologists and other members of the medical establishment recognizing the psychological benefits of improving appearance encourage not only the use of decorative cosmetics but also the development and use “cosmetceuticals” to modify the effects of aging, sun damage and other conditions such as pigmentary disorders. In this symposium, we shall examine the hazards of cosmetic usage related to adverse reactions to these products. There will be a careful examination of the importance of fragrance allergy and how to identify it.  Newer allergens in cosmetics will be assessed.  We will review the ability to identify cosmetic allergens with product patch testing in patients. On the other side of the coin, biometrics allows us to assess realistically the perceived benefits of cosmetic usage. Several of our speakers will review the science behind the claims of benefit.
